Cwmgors kicked off playing into the wind, towards the road. Nantymoel had the best of territory in the early stages, and took the lead with a long-range penalty after 10 minutes. As the game progressed Cwmgors came more into it, and long range penalty from Steff Garland hit the upright, soon after another was pushed wide. Cwmgors had a chance to level the score after Dylan Hills made a good run, only to be caught just short of the line. Nanymoel were penalised under their own posts. Cwmgors took a quick tap to exploit an overlap to the right, unfortunately, it didn't succeed. As you find when luck is against you, Nantymoel managed to score a converted try just before the interval to lead 0-10.
Cwmgors were soon on the scoreboard in the second half with a long-range penalty from Steff Rees. However, that was cancelled out with a Nantymoel penalty. Cwmgors kept on pressing and were rewarded with an unconverted try out wide by Jack Evans. Steff Rees kicked another penalty to reduce the deficit to 11-13, and Cwmgors came close several times to crossing the line for a try, but were held up short each time. Just before the final whistle Cwmgors were awarded a penalty between the half-way and 10m line. Steff Rees' kick looked to be going over, but swerved to the left in the final moments.

A much changed Brynaman from last season, kicked the game off playing towards the swimming pool, and were soon on the attack. They opened the score in slightly controversial circumstances. They were awarded a penalty, and took a quick tap. Their player seemed to lose control of the ball, but rather than awarding a Cwmgors scrum, the referee gave Brynaman the opportunity to retake the penalty. This time they decided to kick for goal, which gave them a 3-0 lead. Shortly after, Brynaman scored an unconverted try in the corner, following some good handling. They followed this with another try through their forwards. At 13-0 ahead, they looked to be running away with the match. However, Cwmgors were coming more into the game, and scored next. Good work by the forwards allowed Steff Rees to put Lloyd Watson through for a try. Steff Rees' conversion made it 13-7. Cwmgors were back in the match. A Steff Rees penalty made the score 13-10 at the interval.
The second-half didn't produce any tries. An early Brynaman attack was held out by Cwmgors, and they settle for a drop goal to extend their lead to six points. Both sides had chances, but the next to score were Cwmgors. Steff Rees' penalty from the 10m line made it 16-13. Brynaman extended their lead with another penalty. At 19-13, the game finished controversially. Cwmgors won a lineout, and were attacking in the Brynaman half. The referee blew up due to an injury, but rather than restarting the game with a Cwmgors scrum, signalled the end of the game.

A fit looking Nantyffyllon side kicked off playing towards the road, and took the lead with an early penalty. Their lead was short lived after Steff Rees kicked a penalty from the 10-meter line to make it 3-3. Nantyffyllon retook the lead with another penalty, before Steff Rees made it 6-6 with a penalty almost immediately from the restart. At this stage, the sides were evenly matched in both possession and field position. Both sides had chances to score, but couldn’t cross the line. Nantyffyllon did manage to cross over out wide mid-way through the first half, but failed with the conversion to make it 6-11. The remainder of the half saw both teams having opportunities to score, but not managing to finish off moves.
Cwmgors had to make some enforced changes as the game progressed, and Nantyffyllon’s fitness began to show. Cwmgors’ defence held out early on in the half, only conceding a penalty, which gave the visitors a 6 -14 lead. In the final quarter, Nantyffyllon’s fitness really began to tell, scoring 4 converted tries, 2 of them in the final 2 minutes. There were some good individual performances. Mathew Vickers did well in covering around the field. Dylan Hills was always prepared to carry the ball, but often lacked support, and Steff Rees managed several half breaks. The pack started well in the tight, but struggled towards the end.

Morriston kicked off this Plate 1st Round match playing with the wind, and took an early 0 – 3 lead with a penalty. Their lead was short-lived. Steff Rees made it 3 -3 when Cwmgors were also awarded a penalty. A promising break from Lloyd Watson for Cwmgors ended with only the full-back to beat, due to lack of support. Morriston retook the lead shortly after this. They were awarded a penalty on the 15m line close to just inside Cwmgors’ half of the field. The kick went wide, but they were awarded another penalty, much closer this time, which they kicked to make it 3 – 6. Cwmgors were next to score with a try. Lloyd Watson made a break, and linked with Steff Rees who was up in support. He continued the move, before passing to Jack Evans, who gave the final pass to Louie Ford to touch down for a try out wide. Cwmgors extended their lead with another try. A cross kick by Steff Rees was eventually collected by Jack Evans, some good driving work by the forwards carried play close to the Morriston line. The ball was recycled, and Steff Rees spotted a gap and crossed over for a try, which he also converted, to make it 15 – 6. Morriston were next to score with a converted try, a solo effert from their full-back. Just before the interval, Morriston were caught offside, and Steff Rees kicked the penalty to give Cwmgors an 18 – 13 lead.
Cwmgors extended their lead early in the second-half. Good work by the forwards saw them regain the ball, and force Morriston to give away a penalty, which Steff Rees kicked to make it 21 – 13. Morriston came back strongly, and were deep in Cwmgors’s 22. Cwmgors managed to turn over possession and a good counter attack by the backs saw them take the game into Morriston’s half. Morriston conceded another penalty, which Steff Rees kicked to extend the lead to 24 – 13. Cwmgors were soon back in Morriston’s half, and a good lineout win by Richard Greig saw the ball being moved along the back line, and Jack Evans raced over to score in the corner. Steff Rees kicked the conversion to make it 31 – 13. Morriston didn’t give up, and where rewarded with an uncoverted try. Once again, a solo effort from their full-back. Cwmgors scored their fourth try of the game when Steff Rees made another break from his own half. The ball was passed back inside and Owain Sullivan, still had work to do before outpacing the Morriston defence to cross over for the try. Steff Rees kicked the conversion to bring his tally for the day to 23 points, and crown a man-of-the-match performance. Despite being 38 – 18 behind Morriston didn’t give up, and the last word in the match went to them when the referee awarded them a penalty try for killing the ball in the last move of the game. The final score was 38 -25, with a good all-round performance from Cwmgors.

Taibach kicked off, but where without a front row, so the game was played with unopposed scrums. Cwmgors started well and were soon 6 – 0 ahead from Steff Rees penalties, both for offside. Taibach cut the deficit to 3 points, following a penalty from under the posts. Cwmgors were next to score. The forwards won a lineout in the Taibach’s 22, and drove it on. When the drive was held up, Number 8 Luke Gronet took the ball on the burst to cross over for a try, which Steff Rees converted. With the score at 13 – 3, Taibach’s nippy backs were beginning to have an impact. They were awarded a succession of penalties, 2 of which they kicked to bring the score back to 13 -9, and on the halftime whistle, they scored a converted try to lead 13 – 16 at the interval.
Both sides were awardred penalties early in the second half, but both were missed. Cwmgors were doing most of the attacking, and Dylan Hills managed to cross the line, but the referee deemed that the ball was held up. Eventually, a Steff Rees penalty saw Cwmgors level the score at 16 all. Another penalty against Taibach for killing the ball saw Steff Rees give Cwmgors a 19 – 16 lead. This was short lived however following a rare Taibach attack in Cwmgors’ 22, they were awarded a penalty for offside again under the posts. With score at 19 all, in the final moments of the game, the referee gave Cwmgors a penalty on the halfway spot. He then decided to reverse the penalty, which Taibach kicked to touch on the 22m line. The referee then awarded Taibach another penalty, allegedly for a comment on the touchline. Taibach kicked the points, and the referee blew up for full time.

Maesteg Celtic kicked off into the breeze, and were soon in the lead following a successful penalty kick. It was short live however. From the restart Cwmgors regained possession and a high up and under from Steff Rees was dropped by the Celtic defence and the loose ball was pounced on by Adam Thomas for a try. The missed conversion gave Cwmgors the lead 5 – 3. Both sides had territory and possession, and opportunities to add to the score, but it was Maesteg Celtic who scored next, with a try in the corner, following some good play were the ball was passed along the back-line several times. The successful conversion made it 5 – 10. Their lead lasted less than 5 minutes. Despite carrying an injury, Steff Rees threw a dummy 10 meters from the Celtic try line and raced through the gap to score. Man-of-the-match Dan Morgan succeed with the conversion to make it 12 – 10. Maesteg Celtic were next to score a converted try. Cwmgors won a lineout just inside the Celtic half, but the pass between outside half and centre was intercepted by the Maesteg Celtic outside-half, who just managed to beat the defence to cross over in the same corner as their first try. Dan Morgan’s successful penalty for Cwmgors on the stroke of halftime, following some good Cwmgors pressure made it 15 – 17.
A quarter of an hour into the second-half, following several good phases by the backs and forwards, number 8 Luke Gronent crossed for a try near the posts. Replacement Shaun Lewis converted to make it 22 – 17. This spurred Maesteg Celtic on, and they were pilling on the pressure in the Cwmgors 22, but good defence from the home team stopped them from scoring. With the siege lifted, Cwmgors were awarded a penalty near the Maesteg Celtic 10m line, and Shaun Lewis kicked it over the posts to make it 25-17. Maesteg Celtic were not prepared to give up their 100% league record. They were back on the attack, and reduced the deficit to 5 points, with a penalty, after missing an earlier attempt. They maintained the pressure on Cwmgors, but the home side were holding out with some desperate defence. With 3 minutes of normal time left, Maesteg Celtic finally broke through in the corner, after stretching the Cwmgors defence from one touchline to the other several times. The conversion made it 25 – 27, and with time running out, it looked as if Maesteg Celtic would keep their 100% record, and Cwmgors would still be looking for their first league win of the season. There was a final twist in the tale however. Cwmgors fielded a clearing kick from Maesteg Celtic. Some good passing and support work aw the ball reach Johnny Hills, who made some good ground, before offloading in the tackle to supporting player Carwyn Williams. With over 30 meters to the try-line, and Maesteg Celtic defenders in front of him, he put in a grubber kick which landed behind them. Louis Ford was the first to reach the ball, toe-poked the ball over the try-line to win the race for the try in the same corner as the 2 earlier Maesteg Celtic tries. The conversion missed. Cwmgors collected the ball from the restart and controlled it well to see out the remaining few minutes of the game.
Both sides contributed to a great game, and it was well refereed by Steffan Davies of Swansea. Unfortunately for Maesteg Celtic they lost their unbeaten record, but we are delighted that we have finally won our first league game, with a bonus point at last, after being so close in other matches.

On a still cold night Cwmgors kicked-off, and were first to score when Steff Rees kicked a penalty from the Brynaman 10 mete line. Cwmgors had most of the early play, and extended their lead with an unconverted try shortly after. Richard Hills caught a loose ball from a Brnaman lineout near the half way line, made some good ground before offloading to support runner Connor Launchbury, who finished the move with a fine run, beating several Brynaman defenders along the way. Cwmgors had the upper hand, especially in the pack, and were showing much confidence. Brynaman were awarded a long-range penalty, which fell short. Cwmgors started to run the ball from their own line, making some good ground initially, but a handling error saw Brynaman pounce to score an unconverted try. Bryaman were again on the scoreboard when Cwmgors tried to spread the ball wide, only for cold hands o drop the ball. Brynaman scoring their second unconverted try in the same spot, giving them a 10-8 lead at half-time, against the run of play.
From the restart Cwmgors were soon back on the attack, and the forwards drove over, but the referee adjudged the ball wasn’t grounded. Cwmgors were awarded a penalty and Steff Rees kicked it over to regain the lead 10 – 11. Most of the play was in the Brynaman half, but Cwmgors couldn’t score. The weather didn’t help. By now it had started to rain, which made the conditions even worse for handling the ball. Cwmgors eventually did break through. A series of 5-meter scrums eventually saw the Cwmgors pack push the Brynaman 8 back for No. 8 Luke Gronert to score. With the score at 10 – 16, Brynaman were still within a converted try. Cwmgors were awarded a penalty on the halfway line. Unfortunately, Steff Rees’ attempt fell just under the bar. However, he was successful with his next attempt, which was somewhat closer. Most of the remainder of the match was played in the Brynaman half, giving Cwmgors a comfortable 10-19 victory. It was a good all-round performance by Cwmgors, with the pack especially doing well. Cwmgors took an early lead in the game with 2 penalties from Steff Rees, the second of which was due to a deliberate knock-on from Nantymoel, with a try looking on. Cwmgors were doing most of the attacking, and finally broke through the Nantymoel defence. From a scrum outside the Nantymoel 22, the ball was passed out to the backs. Lloyd Watson, playing at outside half, looped around to take a return pass and broke through, and passed to Sam Baker who ran straight to cross over for the try that Steff Rees converted. In a rare foray into the Cwmgors half Nantymoel were awarded a penalty which made the score 3 – 13 at the interval.
Cwmgors were back on the attack in the second half, and pressure was turned into points with 2 penalties from Steff Rees. Nantymoel were coming more into the game, and were rewarded with a converted try to make the score 10 – 19. However, it was Cwmgors who were to have the final word. Cwmgors were awarded a scrum 5m from the Nantymoel line. Rather than keeping the ball in, it was fed out to Lloyd Watson, who took the ball at speed to cross over for a try to cap a man of the match performance. Steff Rees converted to make the final score 10 – 26.
The forwards played very well and kept the home side under pressure, and the reshuffled back line, with several players playing out of position also made good contributions. Pictures

At the third attempt this WRU National Plate 3 Round match was finally played. Both other games were postponed due to the weather. Pencoed kicked off the game playing into a breeze. However, it was Cwmgors who scored first through a Steff Rees penalty. Cwmgors had started well, with the forwards applying pressure on the opposing 8, especially in the scrums. Twenty minutes into the game a Pencoed prop was injured, and they did not have cover for his side of the scrum. As a result, the game continued with unopposed scrums. This was a turning point in the match. Pencoed scored almost immediately. The try was unconverted. With Cwmgors a man down, Pencoed extended their lead, to 10-3, on the stroke of halftime with an unconverted try.

Cwmgors were next to score when permit player crossed over for an unconverted try following some good snipping runs by the forwards and backs. Cwmgors maintained the pressure and were rewarded when tireless Johnny Hills took the ball on the burst and crashed over for a try which Steff Rees converted. With the score at 20 – 15 and Cwmgors applying the pressure through the forwards, it looked promising. However, from the restart a mistake by Cwmgors was pounced upon by Pencoed, and they turned this possession into a converted try. At 27 – 15 down, and with less than 15 min left, Cwmgors reapplied the pressure. With 5 minutes of the game left, following some more good driving by the forwards, Mathew Lemon crashed over for his second try, which went unconverted. Despite their best efforts Cwmgors couldn't score again, and had to be content, at 27 – 20, with a losing bonus point.

Most of this match was played in one half of the field. Ystradgynlais kicking off towards the school end, with the wind, had this advantage in the first half. Despite Ystradgynlais doing all of the attacking, it was Cwmgors who opened the scoring. Ystradgynlais charged down a kick in the Cwmgors 22, but Cwmgors recovered the ball, and the counter attack reached the half way. The ball was kicked ahead, and Steff Rees won the race to score an unconverted try. Ystradgynlais were back camped in the Cwmgors half, and a driving lineout saw them score a try to even the score. They added to this with strong run by their centre to score under the post. The conversion made it 5 – 12. Then on the stroke of half-time, they added another converted try.
Soon after the restart Steff Rees kicked a penalty to make it 8 – 19. Apart from a short period just before the final whistle, when Ystradgynlais had a lineout in Cwmgors’ 22, most of the second half saw Cwmgors doing most of the attacking. However, Ystradgynlais’ defence held firm, and the early penalty was the only score of the half.

In the second half a long-range penalty from Steff Rees fell short. Cwmgors were on the attack and a passage of play saw the Morriston defence being stretched when the ball was moved across the pitch, and Lloyd Watson crossed in the corner. Cwmgors playing with the wind had an early opportunity to take the lead, but the penalty kick went wide of the posts. Most of the early game was played between the 22s, with neither side looking like scoring a try. Penlan latched on to a miss kick by Cwmgors to launch an attack, from which they scored an unconverted try to give them a 5-nil lead. Penlan had further chances to extend their lead. The one from an unsuccessful penalty, and when they again broke through, and with no one in front, and plenty of support, the ball carrier was caught and tackled from behind, and failed to offload before Cwmgors’ defence came back to quash the attack. Towards the end of the half Cwmgors finally had a period of pressure in Penlan’s 22, and just before half-tie, Steff Rees kicked a penalty to make the score 3-5 at the interval.
Cwmgors upped their game in the second half, and much of the match was now being played in the Penlan half. Johnny Hills eventually crossed over for a try after catching the ball in a lineout and driving over for an unconverted try. With the score at 8 all Cwmgors were still attacking and had several chances to score, including a good passage of play amongst the backs, unfortunately the final pass was dropped with the line only a few meters away. Towards the end of the half Penlan eventually managed to get into the Cwmgors’ 22, and were awarded a penalty, which they kicked to retake the lead 8 – 11, and were pressing in the Cwmgors 22 when the final whistle blew.

Cwmgors took an early lead through a Steff Rees penalty. It stayed on 3 -0 for most of the half. Cwmavon tried to use their backs, but Cwmgors held firm. A series of penalties for Cwmavon were awarded on the 5-meter line, and each time they opted for a scrum, but failed to push Cwmgors back over the try line. Yet another losing bonus point. A strong looking Taibach kicked off into the strong wind, and were soon on the scoreboard with a penalty awarded almost under the posts. Cwmgors took a long time to come to terms with playing with the wind. One kick from under their own posts was kicked dead over the Taibach line, to give the hosts a scrum back from where the ball was kicked. It was well into the half before Cwmgors had a sustained period of play in the Taibach half. Cwmgors were trying to keep the ball alive, and looking for the offload. Unfortunately, it often lead to the ball being knocked on, or stolen by the oppostion. The only other chances to score in the first half were 2 long range penalties for Cwmgors. Both from inside their own half, and both were wide of the posts.
Taibach extended their lead early in the second half with 2 penalties, before Steff Rees hit back with a penalty to make it 9-3. With about 10 minutes left a loose pass from Cwmgors in midfield was pounced on by Taibach, and the ball was passed out wide for an unconverted try in the corner. Cwmgors didn't give up however. Dylan Hills, on permit, managed to force himself over for an unconverted try to makee the score 14 - 8. The final few minutes saw Cwmgors trying to run the ball from everywhere in order to score another try. Taibach kicked the ball dead from the resulting scrum to end the game.

Morriston took the lead with a controversial try. A Morriston player appeared to trip a Cwmgors defender chasing a kick from Morriston over the Cwmgors line. The trip allowed the Morriston wing to run past and touch the ball down. The conversion giving the hosts a 7-0 lead. Their second try came from a well worked back move from a scrum. The conversion gave them a 14-0 lead. When you are down the luck also appears to go against you. Morriston’s next 2 tries came from charge downs. The first came from a long Morriston kick, the referee having missed a clear knock when a Morriston player lost the ball on the floor following a tackle prior to this. The second came when Cwmgors were attacking and the charge down rebounded far behind the onrushing Cwmgors backs. The conversion giving Morriston a 26-0 lead.
