The first game in the new WRU Bowl competition was played at Cefneithin. The home side kicked off and were first to score with a penalty. Soon after Cwmgors replied with a penalty from Jordan Smith. Cefneithin pressure resulted in a succession of penalties, but they only succeed in one of the four to give them a 6-3 lead. Just before half-time Cefneithin managed to score an unconverted try in the left corner.
Cwmgors were first to score in the second half with a long-range penalty from Jordan Smith. Cefneithin hit back with a converted try, and extended their lead soon after with a penalty. Despite the efforts of both sides, there was no further score in the final 30 minutes.
Tumble raced to a 14-point lead in the early stages of the game with two penalties followed by a try and another penalty before Cwmgors hit back with a penalty from Jordan Smith. Tumble extended their lead with another try to make it 3-19 at half-time.
Cwmgors were first to score in the second-half with Iestyn Llewellyn crossing for a try following good work by the forwards. Tumble had the final word with 2 late tries, converting the last to make the final score 8-31.
Amman Utd kicked off in this local derby, but Cwmgors were first to score when Jack Lodwig crossed over for a try after some good work by the forwards. Andrew Mason converted to make it 0-7. Cwmgors extended their lead to 10 points with an Andrew Mason penalty. Amman Utd hit back with a converted try to make it 7-10. Another Andrew Mason penalty made it 7-13 to Cwmgors. Amman Utd hit back with a try to narrow the lead to 1 point, and just before half time Amman Utd with a two man advantage scored a converted try to give them a 19-13 lead at the interval.
Early in the second half following some good inter-passing Andrew Mason scored an unconverted try to make it 19-18. Cwmgors regained the lead when Steff Phillips took control of a kick that the Amman Utd players let bounce to score under the posts. Andrew Mason converted to make it 19-25. Amman Utd were awarded a penalty just inside their own half soon after. Cwmgors’ players frustration at the decision resulted in some back chat and the referee advanced the penalty twice, so that it was taken just outside the Cwmgors 22m. The kick made it 22-25. Amman Utd then scored two converted tries from their darting scrum half to make the score 36-25. Cwmgors didn’t give up and with less than 10 minutes to go the ball was passed out to Ioan Davies who scored an unconverted try in the corner. Despite pressing in the final minutes, Cwmgors failed to add to the score and had to be content with 2 bonus points.
Cwmgors kicked off the game playing towards the school, but Cefneithin were first to score with a converted try. Cwmgors were soon on the board however with an Andrew Mason penalty. A good individual break from Owen Davies gave Cwmgors the lead 8-7 soon afterwards, with the conversion hitting the post. Some good work by the forwards resulted in Andrew Mason scoring after taking a good angle in his supporting run. His conversion made it 15-7 to Cwmgors. Cefneithin hit back before the interval with a converted try to make it 15-14.
A Cefneithin penalty gave them the lead early in the second half. They extended their lead with another converted try. Cwmgors hit back when another break by Owen Davies opened the Cefneithin defence, and his off-load was gathered by Ioan Jones to score. Andrew Mason’s conversion made it 22-24. Late into the game Cefneithin scored another converted try to make it 22-31, and despite their efforts Cwmgors couldn’t reduce the margin.
The game was kicked off by Betws playing down the slope. They were first to score with an unconverted try. It was Cwmgors however who had most of the possession and territory. A long-range penalty from Jordan Smith made the score 5-3. Soon after a penalty from Andrew Mason gave Cwmgors a 5-6 lead. This was extended when Jordan Smith kicked another long-range penalty, and when Betws were penalised from the restart, he was just wide with a kick from the half-way line.
Again Cwmgors dominated most of the second half, but the only points came from a penalty by Andrew Mason, to give a very young side Cwmgors their first win of the season 5-12.
Cwmgors took the early lead in this local derby with an Andrew Mason penalty. However, Amman were soon on the scoreboard with a converted try. Another Andrew Mason penalty made it 6-7. Two further converted tries from the Amman made it 6-21 before a Jordan Smith try made it 11-21.
Two penalties from Andrew Mason early in the second half made it 17-21, before the Amman restored their 10-point lead with two penalties of their own. A good break by Steff Phillips looked as if he would reach the line, but he was caught a few meters short, but some good support play saw Kyle Phillips cross in the corner for an unconverted try to make it 22-27 with 7 minutes to play. However, it was the Amman who finished stronger scoring 2 converted tries, the second being the last play of the match to win 22-41
Cwmllynfell kicked off this local derby, playing down the slope, and were soon ahead with a penalty. A few minutes later Cwmgors missed the chance to equalise when their kick went wide. Cwmllynfell extended their lead when their forwards drove over for an unconverted try. After another long-distance penalty went wide, Cwmgors eventually were on the score board when Andrew Mason kicked a penalty to make it 8-3. By now Cwmgors had most of the possession and territory, and they made this pay when Joseff Davies darted over for a try after some good work by the Cwmgors forwards. Andrew Mason converted to give Cwmgors a 8-10 lead. Cwmgors maintained the pressure. The outside backs forced an error from Cwmllynfell, and Owen Davies sprinted over and touched down under the posts. Andrew Mason converted to give Cwmgors a 8-17 lead at the interval.
Early in the second half Cwmllynfell took advantage of some poor discipline from Cwmgors and squeezed over for a converted try near the left corner, to make it 15-17. Cwmllynfell had a chance to go into the lead a few minutes later, but their penalty kick went wide. Some more indiscipline from Cwmgors gave Cwmllynfell good field position, and they capitalised with an unconverted try to give them a 20-17 lead. Cwmgors appeared to re-take the lead when Joseff Davies crossed over for a touch-down, but the ref over-ruled the play for obstruction. With 10 minutes left to play Cwmgors scored the try of the match to regain the lead 20-22. Cwmllynfell kicked out of their 22, and the ball was caught by Mike Davies near his own, he made some good yards before sending a looping pass into mid-field near Cwmgors’ 10m line. The ball was caught on the burst by Steff Phillips who ran around the Cwmllynfell defence, and despite being ankle tapped near the try line managed to scramble over for an unconverted try. With only a few minutes left on the clock, Cwmgors were penalised just inside the Cwmllynfell half near the centre spot. The resultant penalty went over to give Cwmllynfell the lead 23-22. From the restart Cwmllynfell gave away a penalty, and some indiscipline from them saw it advanced 10m. Andrew Mason stepped up and slotted over the penalty to make it 23-25 to Cwmgors, with the ref blowing up to end the match.
The game was played in very difficult conditions with a strong cross field wind. Cwmgors had the early run of play but found it difficult to translate possession and territory into points. Eventual, from a line-out good runs by the forwards saw the ball reach Rob Clive who powered over for a try, which Andrew Mason converted. From the restart Cwmafan established field position in the Cwmgors half, and the pressure saw them cross over for a converted try. Their lead was short lived. Cwmgors had field position in the Cwmafan 22, and Joseff Davies scrambled over for an unconverted try to give Cwmgors a 12-7 lead at half-time.
Cwmafan were first to score with an unconverted try through their forwards to level the points. Cwmgors regained when Mike Jones found a gap on the wing to score an unconverted try. With the game drawing to a close, Cwmafan managed a final surge to cross over for an unconverted try to level the score 17-17.
Cwmgors kicked off playing into a strong wind. Baglan made good use of the wind early on, turning their pressure into points with a penalty to open the scoring. Cwmgors did have some good possession and field position despite the wind against them, but Baglan were using the elements to pin Cwmgors back. They extended their lead with an unconverted try, and followed this up with a converted try with a breakout from their own half. Despite being 15-0 down Cwmgors were beginning to have more ball and field position, and this resulted in a maul being driven over following a lineout, with Ben Curtis Jones scoring. The kick from Andrew Mason seemed to be going over until the wind caught it to push it wide. With the score at 15-5, most of the play was now in the Baglan 22. With half-time approaching, Cwmgors seemed to cross over with a driving maul near the posts, but the referee called it short. A few moments later Cwmgors did cross the line, but the ball was held up. From the goal-line drop out to restart the match, Baglan used the wind to kick the ball deep into Cwmgors’ half. They won possession and scored a converted try at the end of the half. So Cwmgors, rather than going in at half time 15-10 or 12 were now down 22-5.
The only score of the second half came early on. A break in midfield by Baglan was well supported and they touched down near the posts for an easy conversion to give them a 29-5 lead. Most of the second half saw Cwmgors attacking in the Baglan 22, but were unable to cross the line. It was a far more even encounter than the score line suggests.
Vardre kicked off playing towards the road. They were first to score when they won the race to a kick and chase. A Cwmgors penalty from Andrew Mason made it 3-5. Some good passing from Vardre saw them get the ball wide to score a converted try. Cwmgors had the chance to cut the lead just before the break through an Andrew Mason penalty, but the kick went wide.
A converted try from Vardre in saw them extend their lead to 3-19 early in the second half. A period of sustained Cwmgors pressure eventually saw Owen Wright go over after a good drive from a tap penalty. Andrew Mason converted to make it 10-19. Vardre scored from a well-rehearsed move for the final score of the match. With the conversion it ended 10-26.
A young Cwmgors side took on a powerful Aberavon Green Stars side, and overall gave a good account of themselves. Green Stars scored their first early from a driving lineout to give them a 7-point lead. Cwmgors came more into the match during the half, but with 5 minutes of the half left, Greens Stars scored 2 tries, converting the fist of these, while Cwmgors were down to 14 men, to make it 19 -0 at the break
The second-half remained scoreless until the final 10 minutes, when Green Stars scored 2 converted tries, the second, coming from the restart following the previous score.
Despite enjoying most of the possession and territory, Cwmgors lost against Cwmtwrch. Two penalties gave Cwmgors a 6-point lead, and it was not until late in the half that Cwmtwrch scored an unconverted try to make it 5-6 at half-time.
The second half was mostly played in the Cwmtwrch half of the field. The critical moment came when Cwmgors lost control of the ball at the back of an advancing 5-meter scrum. Cwmtwrch gained possession and kicked up field. The Cwmgors backs ran the ball back, but a long pass was intercepted in midfield to enable Cwmtwrch to score a converted try under the posts. Cwmtwrch later added a penalty to make it 15-6. Despite their efforts Cwmgors failed to score in the remaining quarter of an hour of the game.
